Rodney Greenwood

Rodney was awarded Citizen of the Year for his exceptional leadership, community spirit, and unwavering dedication. Since becoming president in 2019, Rodney has transformed the Palmerston Raiders Club, increasing membership by 56% and establishing a successful women's team. Under his leadership, the Raiders have flourished, with notable achievements such as winning the Banitba Shield.

Rodney supported numerous community events including Youth Week, NAIDOC Family Days and the City of Palmerston Territory Day celebrations and Palmerston Youth Festival events. Mental health awareness is evident in his efforts to provide support services at home games, offering a safe space for individuals to seek help. Rodney's resilience, stemming from his background as a former army member, has made him a true advocate for well-being, family, and community unity. Rodney’s passion in sports makes him a deserving candidate for this prestigious award.

Yolanda Kanyai

Yolanda Kanyai was awarded Young Citizen of the Year for her work with multiple community organisations including Vibrant Diverse Cultures, Football without Borders, the Congolese Sports and Culture Association NT, as well as Rotaract NT Young Professionals. Yolanda’s work with these organisations has demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication to community advocacy and empowerment, her program development has led to the creation of innovative and impactful initiatives that have built capacity for individuals and communities.

Palmerston NAIDOC Committee Elders Lunch

Community Event of the Year was Palmerston NAIDOC Committee Elders Lunch, which was held on 10 July, arranged by the NAIDOC Organising Committee and funded by Grassroots Action Palmerston. The event brought together 100 First Nations elders from across the community, fostering a sense of connection and belonging, through shared stories, and knowledge strengthening social bonds within the community. The theme for the event was “Keep the Fire Burning, Blak, Loud & Proud”. Attendees enjoyed live music, giveaways and a warm, joyful and inclusive environment. The Elder’s lunch was a vibrant demonstration of Blak excellence and a platform to promote social justice.

The Elder’s Lunch is an integral part of Palmerston’s cultural calendar, enhancing the liveability of the community by creating a unique event that brings together diverse groups to celebrate First Nations Heritage. It has become a cornerstone for building community identity and strengthening local relationships.
