Current

Project: City of Palmerston is redeveloping the Palmerston Swimming and Fitness Centre into a Swimming, Wellness, Events, Leisure and Lifestyle precinct for the entire community to enjoy.

Overview

The proposed SWELL (Swimming, Wellness, Events, Leisure, Lifestyle) master plan is part of Council’s strategic vision to provide Palmerston residents with a contemporary and family friendly, water and lifestyle precinct.

Located in Moulden, Palmerston, the ageing facility will be upgraded to cater to a wider range of interests to support Palmerston’s growing population. 

The redevelopment will include:

  • refurbishment of the 50-metre pool
  • a toddlers zero depth and play pool
  • an events area
  • basketball half court
  • new and improved accessible toilets and change rooms
  • aquatic play structure
  • energy efficient, modern pool plant and equipment and shade features.

 

Cost

The City of Palmerston, the Northern Territory Government and the Australian Government have committed $19.4M towards this project.

Construction Timeline

Early stages of construction are taking place now with works expected to be completed by November 2023.

The following are approximate timelines of the project and are updated as the project progresses.

Mar/Apr: Half court basketball / BBQ area
               Refurbishment of amenities and store rooms
May: Walkway structures
Jun: Zero-depth pool
Jun: Adventure Play structure
Aug: Program warm-water pool
Aug: Refurbishment of 50m swimming pool
Oct: Completion and inspection
Nov: Opening

Current Status

The Youth Centre and Gym have a new access point and will continue to operate as normal during construction 

The following works has been completed on site: 

  • Construction site has been established
  • The demolition and removal of the pump house plantroom, leisure pool, shade structures and 50m pool
  • edge (where the ramp will be installed) has been completed
  • The decommissioning and removal of redundant underground services
  • The electrical transformer pad has been constructed
  • Installation of electrical substation and water main is complete
  • Earth works, site leveling and building pad construction
  • Formwork, reinforcing & concrete poured for 50m balance tank lid
  • Installation of pool underground balance tank
  • Installation of sewer pump station
  • Excavation and ground works for the leisure pool
  • The installation of the balance tank has commenced
  • 50m balance tank 90% complete
  • Both ends of 50m pool are now structurally complete
  • 50% of the blockwork complete for the plant room
Looking Ahead
  • Further installation of underground services
  • lnstallation of pool drainage and edge footings
  • Leisure and program pool detailed excavations and service installations
  • 50m pool concrete works, drainage and footings
  • Adventure play, multipurpose half court and plant room construction of footings and slabs
  • Balance tank testing
  • 50m pool ramp base and stairs construction
  • Excavation of program pool
  • Shop drawings (design to enable manufacturing) for shade structures, adventure play and structural steel

Works will take place Monday to Saturday between the hours of 7am to 5pm. Where any local traffic diversions or night works are required, advance notice will be given to nearby residents and businesses.

The public swimming pool will be closed for the duration of construction, while the fitness centre will remain open. We thank you in advance for your patience and consideration.
