City of Palmerston is pleased to announce nominees of the prestigious 2025 Palmerston Australia Day Awards.
These annual awards honour individuals, groups and voluntary organisations who have demonstrated exceptional dedication, leadership, and service to the community.

BALACHANDER MOHANRAJ
Balachander was nominated for the outstanding contributions to the Palmerston community as a dedicated volunteer. Bala plays an integral role in organising and supporting Tamil Society events, assisting with event logistics and volunteering to MC at the Musical Event at Goyder Square.
Balachander’s volunteering extends beyond events, delivering food to the homeless, and providing meals for children in the 11 Mile area. Bala is a lifetime member of multiple cultural associations, including the Tamil Society NT, Telugu Association NT, and Indian Cultural Society NT. His enthusiasm and energy are infectious he lifts the spirits of those around him. Bala’s involvement in the community also includes volunteering at the Darwin Sai Centre, where he leads prayers, and coaches the Under 12 kids at the Palmerston Cricket Club. Known for his diverse talents, Bala can play the mridangam, dance, act, and tell jokes, often using these skills to entertain and enrich the community.

EMMA CAWOOD
Emma has been nominated for her outstanding dedication to the Palmerston community, with a particular focus on supporting youth sports and mental health initiatives. In addition to coaching for the Sharks U’11s team this year, Emma has also played a key role in organising events and mentoring new coaches and managers. Her community involvement extends beyond rugby serving as a board member and volunteer at the Palmerston Magpies AFL Club and actively supporting the Two-Two-One Mental Health Charity.
Emma also volunteers at the Palmerston Game Fishing Club and is a dedicated contributor to her children’s school community, dedicating 10-15 hours each week to these various roles, has had a lasting and positive impact. Emma’s leadership was also evident in her coordination of the Sharks’ teams at the Tamboran Top End Cup and her volunteer work for the AFL NT Championship. Emma has made significant contributions to the Palmerston community.

DIAN DUNN
Dian was nominated in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the Breatheasy NT S.T.A.A.R.S Group and the Palmerston Community. Dian has been President of the Breatheasy NT S.T.A.A.R.S Group for the last seven (7) years and dedicated her time to helping connect people who have chronic pulmonary conditions to ongoing support. Di organises weekly meetings which feature guest speakers, exercises, members updates and opportunities for social connection including annual events and excursions.
Di’s caring and selfless attitude towards the community is demonstrated through providing transport to those who need support with daily living tasks and activities. Through both her formal and informal volunteer contributions Di embodies the spirit of community service and generosity.

HANNAH FINBOW
Hannah was nominated for the Australia Day Awards for her dedication to empowering women and supporting her community in Palmerston. Hannah volunteers her time with various Not-For-Profit organisations and has made a significant impact in the world of powerlifting. As a passionate advocate for women’s strength and empowerment, Hannah organised the first ever Katherine Powerlifting Competition and “come-and-try” powerlifting day. She supports the fitness community by offering free mentoring building people’s confidence in competing. Being a small
business owner, mother and a semi-pro athlete has not stopped Hannah consistently giving back to others. Hannah shares personal experiences that inspire others, especially women to find their strength, her positive influence extends beyond Palmerston embodying community spirit by connecting and uplifting those around her.

KATIE GRIMSHAW
Katie has been nominated for the Australia Day awards in recognition of her exceptional dedication to environmental conservation and community engagement in Palmerston. As a founding member of the Palmerston Conservation Group (PCG), Katie has played a leadership role in shaping conservation activities for the Mitchell Creek catchment and other areas in the municipality. Contributing to the Darwin Harbour Catchment Waterways project and regular engagement in weed and rubbish removal around Zuccoli.
Katie’s commitment extends to growing fruit and vegetables in her front yard, sparking conversations with passers-by, and sharing the produce. She also designed promotional signage for PCG and manages the group's Facebook page, helping to build a volunteer base for future conservation projects. Outside of conservation, Katie is active in her community through the Rural Athletics Club, volunteering at school camps, and supporting her son’s soccer team. Her efforts have led to a cleaner, healthier Mitchell Creek bushland, more awareness of local conservation issues, and a stronger sense of community in Palmerston.

LUKE SEIB
Luke has been nominated for his exceptional contributions to volleyball and youth development in the Northern Territory. Luke is the founder of Top End Volleyball Association and the president of Volleyball NT. Luke has dedicated his time to building a thriving and inclusive volleyball community, he has been instrumental in creating community outreach programs that bring volleyball to remote areas across the Territory. By providing training and mentorship Luke has introduced young people to the sport and supported them to develop crucial life skills.
Through Luke’s efforts and dedication have enabled the Northern Territory to send their largest and most successful team to the National Youth Championships in 2024. Having been selected as head coach for U’18 Australian Boys Youth Development Tour of Thailand in 2023 and team manager/assistant coach at the Asian Championships U’16 Australian Team Lukes contributions are clearly valued.

NATALIE LA PIRA
Natalie La Pira was nominated for her significant and lasting impact on the Palmerston community through various initiatives that promote creativity, youth engagement, and community welfare. The creation of a legal paint space for street artists in the underground car park at Palmerston shops has transformed the space into a vibrant hub that fosters local talent and reduces graffiti. This space, managed by a local artist has become a beacon of creativity and pride, encouraging positive community engagement. Natalie worked alongside local artists and approved its use.
Natalie has supported youth healing by facilitating memorial murals after community tragedies, also establishing a drop-in music studio, providing young people with a safe, productive space to explore their musical talents and build confidence. Natalie’s support for community events, such as the Palmerston Street Art Festival, and her donations for youth sports prizes, have enriched local activities and motivated youth participation.

Paeatia has been nominated for the Australia Day awards for his exceptional leadership and dedication to rugby union and the Palmerston community. Since January 2024, Pae has coached various teams and community clubs and is committed to prioritising the development and inclusion of young people, his passion for rugby and creating safe, positive environments have helped many Palmerston athletes explore new opportunities, including pathways to represent sports.
Pae’s selflessness extends beyond coaching; he has worked tirelessly to establish the All-Nations Rugby NT program, providing inclusive opportunities for athletes of all backgrounds. Pae invests time in mentoring, fosters team unity and the need for respect both on and off the field. Providing players with transport, training, equipment and pathway opportunities shows his commitment to Palmerston young people.

RODNEY GREENWOOD
Rodney, president of the Palmerston Raiders Rugby League Football Club, was nominated for his exceptional leadership, community spirit, and unwavering dedication. Since becoming president in 2019, Rodney has transformed the Palmerston Raiders Club, increasing membership by 56% and establishing a successful women's team. Under his leadership, the Raiders have flourished, with notable achievements such as winning the Banitba Shield.
Rodney supported numerous community events including Youth Week, NAIDOC Family Days and the City of Palmerston Territory Day celebrations and Palmerston Youth Festival events. Mental health awareness is evident in his efforts to provide support services at home games, offering a safe space for individuals to seek help. Rodney's resilience, stemming from his background as a former army member, has made him a true advocate for well-being, family, and community unity. Rodney’s passion in sports makes him a deserving candidate for this prestigious award.

SANJEEV PATEL
Sanjeev has been nominated for the Australia Day awards for his valuable contributions to cultural and community life of Palmerston. As the mastermind behind the successful Musical Nights at Goyder Square in 2023 and 2024, Sanjeev planned and delivered these events, by bringing together the local community through music and entertainment. In addition to these events, Sanjeev is organising a 'Bollywood' musical event in Malak, which will be attended by many Palmerston residents. He is also involved with the Multicultural Council of NT, the Gujarati Cultural Association of Darwin, and the Tamil Society.
Sanjeev’s passion for community engagement extends beyond musical events, as he organises Street Food Festivals with plans for one in Palmerston in 2025. Through his dedication to fostering cultural experiences and bringing people together, Sanjeev has made a significant impact on the Palmerston community.

Elorah has been nominated for her valuable work as a library volunteer and member of the Geek Squad demonstrating dedication and passion for her community. Elorah has shown exceptional leadership in her involvement in community and activities including the Geekfest Top End and the Ghostly Gatherings events, mentoring younger Geek Squad members while watching over activities to ensure their success. Elorah’s contributions have helped to build social cohesion and connection across the Palmerston community

Niesha has been nominated for dedication, resilience and leadership as a youth volunteer within Palmerston, over three years in their involvement with Urban Jams, Palmerston Youth Festival, Palmerston Youth Media Team and Palmerston Youth Representative Group have shown Neisha passion to support the community Niesha’s contributions have significantly enhanced the Palmerston community by creating spaces that promote creativity, inclusivity, and youth engagement.

Penny was nominated for her contributions to the Satellite City BMX Club where she volunteers as a coach and general club support role. Penny’s mentoring and positive influence supports younger riders and fosters a welcoming environment. Penny’s efforts not only enhance the club’s inclusivity they also contribute to the overall well-being and cohesion of the Palmerston community.

Yolanda’s work with these organisations has demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication to community advocacy and empowerment, her program development has led to the creation of innovative and impactful initiatives that have built capacity for individuals and communities.

ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER CHILDREN’S DAY
National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day is an important national event which serves to address the differences in health and wellbeing outcome of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. Celebrated on 4 August in recognition of the unknown birthdays of the children taken away from their families at a young age - the stolen generations.
The 2024 Palmerston event was held at Tiverton Park in Moulden with 25 businesses showcased, and over 300 community members participating. This year’s theme was “Strong in Culture, Stronger Together”. This event was delivered with through the collaboration of five (5) local Palmerston organisations using community collaboration and cultural celebration to promote health and wellbeing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and their families.

ARAFURA MUSIC COLLECTIVE
Established in 1995, The Arafura Music Collective is a community of musicians and performing artists based in Darwin. Through intimate small ensemble/chamber music performance they enrich lives, inspire joy and foster connection across genres, cultures, generations and community.
On 1 June 2024, the group presented “Kaleidoscope: The Music of Australian LGBTQIA+ Composers” at Gray Community Hall to an audience of 54 people. The performance was designed to invite audiences to experience the music and hear the stories of local queer experiences brought to life through brand new composition by Ben Opie, premiered at this concert. The performances celebrated the rich diversity and creativity of Australia LGBTQIA+ composers. This event demonstrated the transformative power of music in bringing people together, fostering among Palmerston people understanding, respect and celebrating the beauty of diversity.

Aunties Place is a community-led, safe space collaboratively and wholistically run by Perfectly Imperfect Consulting and Grassroots Action Palmerston Aboriginal Corporation. Together, these organisations have created a vital resource for individuals and families, especially youth and young families seeking mental health support, advocacy and cultural connection within a welcoming and non-clinical environment.
Aunties Place is committed to advocacy for marginalised and underserved groups, ensuring that everyone has access to support and opportunities. By addressing social justice issues and challenging inequalities. Aunties Place is a strong advocate for positive change in the community, focusing on the unique needs of youth and families. Aunties Place hosts workshops, training sessions, and cultural events where community members share skills, knowledge and resources. Through their work in the Palmerston Aunties Place has successfully served countless individual and families by providing a sanctuary of support, understanding and cultural pride.

AUNTY’S FREE FEEDS
Aunty’s Free Feeds is a community collaboration delivering weekly food and groceries to individuals experiencing housing and food insecurity in the Palmerston area. Since 2019, Aunty’s Free Feeds has been providing food and groceries to those in need from the SWELL Carpark in Moulden every Sunday afternoon.
The impact of Aunty’s Free Feeds goes far beyond just providing a meal – they serve as a first port of call for those experiencing sudden and unexpected food insecurity, offering temporary support and guidance to navigate the complex web of support services. The initiative, run entirely by volunteers through generous donations from businesses and individuals has delivered over 312 weekly dinners, and fed diverse numbers showcasing the power of community coming together to make a difference. Aunty’s Free Feeds has helped to build resilience in the Palmerston community by sharing resources and addressing fundamental human needs for people experiencing disadvantage, helping to improve the liveability and social connection.

BREATHEASY NT S.T.A.A.R.S.
Breatheasy NT S.T.A.A.R.S is a special interest group which provides information and support to those suffering from the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The group has approximately 30 members who meet weekly for a social morning tea, as well as three (3) grant subsidised physical therapy sessions. Breatheasy NT S.T.A.A.R.S. has a significant impact on the Palmerston Community providing essential support and resources for those suffering with COPD. Their dedication to promoting health and well-being through their weekly meetings, specialised exercise programs and guest speaker presentation greatly benefits their members, helping them to maintain their independence and improve quality of life.

GOOD SHEPHERD LUTHERAN COLLEGE PALMERSTON CAMPUS – COMMUNITY FUN DAY
Good Shepard Lutheran College is a Lutheran denominational school which has a primary campus in Palmerston. On 1 June 2024, Good Shepard Lutheran College held a Community Fun Day at their Palmerston Campus which included animal encounters, arts and crafts, face painting, food stalls, games and performances, jumping castle and tombola. This event was open to whole community as an opportunity to build social connection and cohesion across our community.

THE HEART FOUNDATION WALKING PROGRAM
The Heart Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to improving heart health of all Australian’s. Heart Foundation Walking is Australia’s largest free walking program. Volunteers currently lead four (4) walking groups in Palmerston including Bunnings Warehouse, Palmerston Shopping Centre, Gateway Shopping Centre and a new initiative at SWELL Palmerston – Aqua Walking. This special initiative allows for people with injury and who require rehabilitation the opportunity to meet the Australian Physical Activity and Exercise Guidelines.
The objective of the Heart Foundation Walking Program is to empower walking for both physical and social health. The walking activities in the Palmerston area have brought the community together creating opportunities to meet new people and make friends building social connection and cohesion.

MAGNIFY HER - WOMEN IN BUSINESS
Magnify Her is a global network of women committed to mutual growth, co-founded by Peta Johansen and Caitlyn Hudson. Their mission is to create a supportive community for women to thrive, connect and empower each other. They believe in the power of unity and collaboration, and together achieving incredible things. Magnify Her offers a platform to share knowledge,
experiences, and resources. In March 2024, Magnify Her held their first in-person event at Gray Community Hall for a women-in-business event, featuring guest speakers, and panel discussions offering a valuable opportunity to bring together like minded women to support and encourage one another.

MUSICAL NIGHT - THE TAMIL SOCIETY
The Tamil Society has actively contributed to the cultural integration of Tamil speaking residents in the NT over the past 40 years with approximately 200 members. In August 2024, the Tamil Society hosted the Musical Night in Goyder Square Palmerston. A strong team of 20 volunteers supported the delivery of the event which included performance and songs in many Indian languages including Hindi, Tamil, Talugu, Gujarati, and Malayalam. Numerous dance performances and martial arts demonstrations were also included. The last hour of the night featured audience participation with the opportunity for spectators to demonstrate their skills and talents.
As a result of the hard work and effort invested by the Tamil Society volunteers, the Palmerston community benefits from a family friendly and safe opportunity to build social connection and cohesion. The Tamil society has also contributed to other Palmerston events and activities including Deepvali, Pongal, Harmony Day and International Women’s Day.

ORANGE SKY PALMERSTON TEAM
Orange Sky is a national not-for-profit organisation which provide free laundry, warm showers and genuine, non-judgemental conversation to Australian’s experiencing homelessness and hardship. Every Tuesday a dedicated group of four volunteers provide essential mobile laundry and shower services to those in need in the Palmerston community at the Palmerston Recreation Centre.
The Palmerston Orange Sky volunteer team offers a safe and supportive space for individuals experiencing homelessness or lacking access to laundry facilities which helps to improve health, hygiene and overall quality of life. In addition to their practical services, the Orange Sky Palmerston team also fosters a sense of community and belonging for those who may be feeling isolated and disconnected.
The Palmerston volunteers offer a non-judgemental and inclusive environment where individuals can not only meet their basic needs but also find support and companionship. As a volunteer-run organisation, the Orange Sky Palmerston team exemplifies the spirit of community service and collaboration.

PALMERSTON RUGBY UNION JUNIOR 7’S TOURNAMENT
Palmerston Rugby Union Football Club (PRUFC) was one of the founding clubs of Northern Territory Rugby Union in 1976/77 and has been playing out of Palmerston since 1984. The PRUFC work tirelessly every year to deliver a unique event – The Palmerston Junior 7’s Tournament. This tournament provides families an affording sporting option for young people aged 4 – 16 years old.
In 2024 the competition incorporated a girl’s division for the first time since the 2020 COVID Pandemic. The Palmerston Junior 7’s competition provides a valuable opportunity for referee development, giving up and coming referees the chance to hone their skills before the official rugby union season commences. The PRUFC host free referee ready learning course in the clubhouse supported by the NT Rugby Referee Association. All referees are paid by PRUFC and are given a 1-on-1 mentoring from a qualified rugby union referee coach. Through their work to promote, junior participation opportunities, inclusivity, and junior official development the PRUFC makes positive ongoing impacts to the Palmerston community.

PALMERSTON NAIDOC COMMITTEE ELDERS LUNCH
The 2024 Elder’s Lunch was held on 10 July arranged by the NAIDOC Organising Committee and funded by Grassroots Action Palmerston. The event brought together 100 First Nations elders from across the community, fostering a sense of connection and belonging, through shared stories, and knowledge strengthening social bonds within the community. The theme for the event was “Keep the Fire Burning, Blak, Loud & Proud”. Attendees enjoyed live music, giveaways and a warm, joyful and inclusive environment. The Elder’s lunch was a vibrant demonstration of Blak excellence and a platform to promote social justice.
The Elder’s Lunch is an integral part of Palmerston’s cultural calendar, enhancing the liveability of the community by creating a unique event that brings together diverse groups to celebrate First Nations Heritage. It has become a cornerstone for building community identity and strengthening local relationships.

PALMERSTON PARK RUN
Palmerston Park Run is a free, fun and friendly weekly 5km community event held at the Palmerston Waterpark every Saturday. Participants of all ages, fitness level and abilities can walk, jog, run or volunteer. Each week up to 100 community members participate, supported by eight (8) volunteers. Park Run provides a safe, enjoyable and welcoming place to exercise.
In November, Palmerston Park Run celebrated its 400th event. The organisation has facilitated a shared responsibility to volunteering demonstrating leadership in the field and inspiring other organisations to instil a similar approach.

RIDING FOR THE DISABLED IN THE TOP END COMMUNITY OPEN DAY
Riding for the Disabled in The Top End is a not-for-profit community dedicated to enabling participants of all ability opportunities to engage in equestrian related activities including horse care and riding programs to increase quality of life, achieve personal goals and improve life skills. On 21 July 2024, Riding for the Disabled in The Top End hosted a community open day offering a variety of fun and engaging activities for people of all ages to enjoy including pony rides, face painting, jumping castle, games and craft activities, sausage sizzle, live music and plant sale.
The aim of the event was promoting the programs offers at Riding for the Disabled in The Top End, meet their horses and wonderful volunteers. Riding for the Disabled in The Top End partnered with multiple organisations on this day including Top End Mustangs, Crocodile Country, and Imagine That Face Painting to enrich the day. This event strengthened community connections across Palmerston and helped raise awareness about the support available to people with disabilities.

STEPS Education and Training is a National not-for-profit organisation which has a strong presence in the Palmerston Community as a passionate provider of training, employment, and community services that aim to improve accessibility, reduce poverty and isolation as well as help people harness their potential leading to happier, healthier lives. STEPS have contributed to numerous community events in Palmerston including International Women’s Day, International Men’s Day, Harmony Day, Refugee Week, Reboot your Loot, and Bilingual Storytime. STEPS currently holds the combined lease of the City of Palmerston’s Community Garden – Harvest Corner with HPA and Life without Barriers. STEPS has numerous high impact partnerships across the community including Services Australia, Melaleuca, Legal Aid, Anglicare – RAMMS, Darwin Community Legal Service and the Red Cross.

STRIVE
Vibrant Diverse Cultures is a non-for-profit community organisation which aims to empower individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds by enhancing their capacity to thrive in the workforce and community. The work of Vibrant Diverse Cultures addresses social isolation, marginalisation, limited access to resources, and opportunity for cultural expression and integration experienced by some migrant groups in Palmerston and the Northern Territory. Their work also contributes to breaking down additional barriers faced by women in meaningful participation in sports and community activities.
Activities and programs delivered by Vibrant Diverse Cultures include the STRIVE Women’s event, Congolese Football Club, and Baby FAST on the Tiwi Islands. Vibrant Diverse Cultures also maintains high impact partnerships with Dementia Australia and the Heart Foundation to increase connection to services and support for migrant groups. The work of Vibrant Diverse Cultures supports marginalised communities, promotes social inclusion and gender equity as well as builds capacity and resilience.

TAIWANESE COMMUNITY OF THE NORTHERN TERRRITORY DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL
The Taiwanese Community of the Northern Territory was founded in 2022 with the aim of introducing Taiwanese Culture to Territorians. On 8 June 2024, at Gray Community Hall the Taiwanese Association held The Taiwanese Dragon Boat Festival one of the most celebrated Taiwanese Festivals in the Lunar Calendar. The Dragon Boat Festival provided a fun and educational event giving Palmerston residents the opportunity to learn the history and meaning of the festival while participating in land dragon boat races, making rice dumplings, making scented sachets, hanging mugworts, and egg balancing challenges.

WALK TO REMEMBER
Walk to Remember was initiated by 12-year-old Taylah Peters in memory of her brother, has become an annual event in Palmerston, providing a safe and supportive space for families to honour and remember children who have passed away. Since its inception, this heartfelt event has grown into a vital community gathering that fosters healing, connection and awareness about the often-unspoken grief of losing a child. In 2024 the event attracted over 70 participants to Sanctuary Lakes providing a communal space for reflection and remembrance, highlighting the importance of talking about grief and mental health, helping to normalise such discussions. Proceeds of the event support Amber NT’s free bereavement services, including one-on-one counselling, group support sessions, and training for healthcare professionals.

WOODROFFE CARE COMMUNITY
The Woodroffe Care Community is a grassroots community organisation based in the Palmerston suburb of Woodroffe, which meets on the first Thursday of each month at Woodroffe School. The group brings together residents of Woodroffe who would like to make a difference in their community. Their aim is to make Woodroffe a safe, friendly, and inclusive neighbourhood with a strong community spirit. They focus on friendship, community and shared responsibility for those living in Woodroffe. Activities delivered by the group including growing and sharing, vegetables, games days, book clubs, cooking classes, gardening classes, bingo night, music, quiz nights and much more.
