The Palmerston municipality is a young, vibrant and growing community. And as our population grows, particularly our demographic of young families, we recognise the importance of activating our outdoor spaces to provide more opportunity for the community to play, meet, socialise, and engage in.

With over 100 parks (approximately 50 having playgrounds), City of Palmerston has adopted the 2022 Play Space Strategy to ensure a more robust and consistent approach to planning in the City's open space network.

The Strategy outlines a vision of quality play spaces that are welcoming, creative and accessible to all, and contributes to the liveability of our City. There were two stages of consultation undertaken, with a community survey, listening posts, and designs from local school children informing early stages of the Strategy.

There are five priority areas to support implementation of the Strategy which include:

  • Implementing the play space planning framework.
  • Increasing the diversity and quality of play experiences and environments.
  • Increasing community involvement and information.
  • Improving connectivity and linkages.
  • Improving maintenance and resourcing.

Particular consideration has been made to ensure accessible play equipment for all abilities is included into all future designs.
