6 week course - with Janie Andrews
Wednesdays 5.30pm - 8.30pm (14 OCT - 2 DEC)

In this six week course, participants will spend two weeks making handmade tiles, followed by a four week program of mosaic assemblage.
In part one of the course, participants are invited to learn how to create beautiful hand made tile features utilising professional clay and glazes. Two weeks will be spent making and creating unique handmade designs,  which will be utilised to create a mosaic panel in part two of the program.
In part two of the course, Janie will guide you into how to use your made tiles to design and create a setting with surrounding tiles to complete your mosaic panel. Mosaics will be made with a variety of materials depending on which setting you may desire: for Wall art, paving piece, table setting, etc. 
This course is a hands-on exploration into traditional and contemporary mosaic ideas and practices.  As a practical course, you will be using different techniques to cut and fix your own tiles into place as we provide ongoing feedback. 

Throughout the workshops you will:
•    Make and glaze tiles
•    Learn how to turn inspiration into a mosaic design
•    Prepare mosaic base
•    Understand the relationship between design and textures
•    Transfer your design to base
•    Prepare, cut and fix tiles to base
•    Receive mentoring as your work towards completion of mosaic
•    Practice finishing techniques such as grouting, cleaning and polishing

About the Artist:
Janie Andrews is a painter, textile and mosaic artist with over 30 years of experience of running her own company to create one-off special artworks through commissions, residencies and for exhibitions. Janie enjoys sharing her skills through workshops with people from many walks of life and spends a lot of time as a Visiting Artist to facilitate and create special artworks with artists and communities both remote and urban. 

Workshop Dates: This is a six week class held over 8 weeks. Classes are held on Wednesdays from 5.30pm - 8.30pm.
14 & 21 October - Tile Making
28 October & 4 November - No classes (tiles drying & firing)
11th, 18th, 25 November & 2 December - Mosaic Making and Assemblage
Cost: $180 - includes materials (adults only)
Venue: Workshops will be held at Durack Heights Community Centre, 33 Packard Avenue, Durack, Palmerston.
