CITY OF PALMERSTON CYCLONE RECOVERY
City of Palmerston would like to extend its thanks and acknowledgement to the Northern Territory Government emergency agencies that have been working around the clock over the past week in the face and recovery of Tropical Cyclone Fina. The advice pre and post cyclone has provided City of Palmerston with clear direction to keep the community safe. City of Palmerston send their thoughts to neighbouring councils who have a significant recovery ahead of them. Notwithstanding those residents that have been impacted heavily, City of Palmerston is well into their recovery efforts.
The Palmerston community has once again shown their resilience and support for each other and Council. Palmerston’s Incident Management and response teams were well prepared in the lead-up to TC Fina, which meant response efforts could commence on Sunday.
As of Monday 21 November, City of Palmerston were able to open all facilities, including our Customer Experience and Emergency Management call centre, Archer Waste Management Facility, SWELL and the Palmerston Library.
All City of Palmerston’s surveys of roads and parks have now been completed. In total there were 915 reports from both Council’s survey teams and calls from the community. Of that, 105 have been completed, with another 159 currently in progress as on Thursday 27 November 2025.
The recovery timeline is difficult to predict, taking weeks or months to complete. City of Palmerston staff and contractors will be actioning all tasks as soon as possible and will be keeping the community updated throughout the process. It is also important to note that there is still the remainder of the cyclone season to get through and cannot dismiss the possibility of another cyclone or intense weather event.
Quote from Mayor Athina Pascoe-Bell
“We are so relieved that our community is safe after Cyclone Fina. Staff efforts and thorough preparation ensured our roads were accessible by Sunday afternoon, a credit to their commitment and planning. Now that the team has finished surveying the whole municipality, their focus will be on getting through the workload efficiently to have all pathways, roads and parks tidy as soon as possible. Recovery may take some time, and I encourage residents to stay up-to-date with the progress on our website and social media. I’d also like to thank the community for their support and patience during this recovery period.”
