City of Palmerston is creating a new and exciting community asset for Palmerston people and these plans have taken a major leap forward today. The Northern Territory Government has granted City of Palmerston 47 hectares of community crown land to build the Zuccoli and Surrounds Community Hub.

The Zuccoli and Surrounds Community Hub will be a place for Palmerston people to come together and enjoy a space that will connect family, friends and the community. The proposed design creates a focal point offering something for everyone, including, walking trails, a dog park, a garden of reflection, a pump track and playground.

The new multipurpose regional hub will play an important role in the community by building networks and supporting health and wellbeing.

The site is well positioned, catering for Palmerston’s family friendly suburbs and is accessible for cars, public transport, pedestrians and cyclists. City of Palmerston’s forward thinking has identified the gaps in this community and feels the hub will provide much needed social infrastructure for residents living in Zuccoli, Johnston and the wider community.

The land grant also includes the natural environment of Mitchell Creek. Council aims to maintain this important and valuable natural resource and respects the home it provides for numerous species of plants and animals. It is council’s ambition to ensure the construction and development in the area compliments the landscape and preserves the biodiversity of the area.

A masterplan has been developed to guide the design of the proposed Zuccoli and Surrounds Community Hub and City of Palmerston will soon commence community consultation to seek feedback.

The development will be split into stages with the first stage to be completed this year, with an already committed regional ‘off-leash’ dog park worth $350,000. All other elements will be prioritised in stages following the end of consultation.

Key proposed features of the project will include (not in any specific order):

•    walking trails
•    skate park
•    pump track
•    playground
•    boutique children’s library
•    community event space
•    community centre and
•    garden of reflection.

Quotes from City of Palmerston Mayor, Athina Pascoe-Bell

The new Community Hub in Zuccoli will be an important public asset for our community. This will be a great space for your community group meetings, a quiet place to study or hosting a celebration. This is an exciting step forward in providing this part of our wider community with an all-inclusive and safe precinct for our growing population.

We look forward to hearing what the community has to say when we launch consultation.

Quotes from the Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics, Hon Eva Lawler

“Creating jobs and growing our social infrastructure is one way we are growing our Territory communities.

“The Zuccoli and Surrounds Community Hub will have something for everyone and will be a positive addition to the growing family community of Palmerston. This grant has been through the due process and will be sitting on community purpose zoned land, making it the perfect complement to the growing region.

“This development will support our growing number of families in Palmerston and we are excited to see the Zuccoli and Surrounds Community Hub come to life.”
