On 3 November 2026, Councillor Yolanda Kanyai resigned from her role as an Elected Member of City of Palmerston Council due to health reasons.
Ms Kanyai was elected to the 11th City of Palmerston Council. She joined with a passion for ensuring young people's voices were heard, supporting services for young families and advocating for local businesses and opportunities that strengthen the Palmerston community.
Ms Kanyai stated, “Over the past 14 months, it has been a privilege to serve on Council and contribute to a city I am proud to call home. I have particularly valued the opportunity to advocate for our residents and ensure all voices are heard.”
Mayor Athina Pascoe-Bell acknowledged Ms Kanyai’s service, saying: “It has been a pleasure working alongside Yolanda whose passion and commitment to our community have been evident throughout her time on Council. Her commitment to Palmerston was recognised well before she joined Council, having been named 2025’s Palmerston Young Citizen of the Year. Her dedication to making a positive difference in our community has continued through her role as an Elected Member. On behalf of Council, I thank Yolanda for her contribution and wish her all the very best as she focuses on her health.”
The resignation creates a vacancy on Council, which will be filled through a by-election. Further information, including key dates, will be provided in due course.
