Reeling out round 2 of Hooked on Palmerston

City of Palmerston’s recreational catch and release barramundi competition returns for a second season, embracing the Top End’s fishing lifestyle right here in our local lakes.

Hooked on Palmerston is ideal for those wanting to catch that elusive barramundi but may not own a boat or have access to the NT’s waterways.

Palmerston’s easily accessible and well-stocked lakes provide the perfect opportunity for all recreational fishers, from beginners to the avid angler, to participate in Hooked on Palmerston for a chance to win a share of almost $10,000 in vouchers to spend at local businesses.

The competition is open to all ages and will run from 1 October 2021 until 31 January 2022, providing plenty of time to tackle a tagged barramundi, or even a monstrous metery.

Each month there will be five prizes worth $250 each for the first five tagged barramundi caught in one of our lakes. In addition to this, a ‘Lucky Baz’ tag number will be released at the beginning of the month. This ‘Lucky Baz’ will be worth a whopping $1000 if submitted. The ‘Lucky Baz’ prize pool will accumulate each month if it’s not caught, meaning this could potentially be worth up to $4000!

City of Palmerston Mayor, Athina Pascoe-Bell looks forward to the next season of the catch and release competition.

“We saw a great amount of community participation in Hooked on Palmerston, and I encourage you all to register again, grab your rods and head down to one of our well stocked, local lakes. Not only does this competition provide an opportunity for family outdoor activity, but it assists in improving awareness of Palmerston lakes, and education around safe fishing practices for those of all ages,” she said.

This year, prizes will come in the form of ‘Palmerston business vouchers’ which winning anglers will be able to choose themselves.

“We are proud to be able to give back to our community and give our local businesses a helping hand,” the Mayor added.

Once you have registered online, make your way to Sanctuary Lakes, Durack Lakes or Marlow Lagoon and let the fun begin! Remember that this is a strict Catch and Release competition, and all registrations must obey the guidelines when catching the fish.
