City of Palmerston continues to be ‘A Place for People’ and the family city of the Northern Territory with several exciting projects worth almost $5 million underway.

Projects being delivered in partnership with the Northern Territory Government include the Zuccoli Parade and Temple Terrace landscaping projects. Local business, Paradise Landscaping NT was recently awarded this work, which is set to employ 34 local people and contribute to the Palmerston economy.

The Zuccoli Parade landscaping project, worth $740,000, involves the beautification of the area between Lambrick Avenue and Vitex Street. The project has commenced and will involve planting of more than 300 trees, 3,000 bedding plants including native grasses, and the installation of irrigation across verges, median strips and roundabouts.

The Temple Terrace landscaping project, totalling $372,000, is estimated to span four months, with works involving the beautification between Chung Wah Terrace to Kafcaloudes Crescent. More than 80 trees, 1,000 groundcovers, 2,200 square metres of irrigated grass and 8,700 square metres of dryland grass will be planted as part of this project and will contributing to cooling and greening the area.   

Other Council projects being delivered in partnership with the Northern Territory Government around the city include:

Greening and Cooling the City – City of Palmerston is committed to creating and maintaining green spaces with a tree planting program throughout the city nearing completion, with a total of 600 trees planted by the end of March.  

Community Safety Public Lighting - A program is underway to improve lighting in various public spaces identified as poorly lit, resulting in potential community safety concerns. Works have commenced at Memorial Park and Marlow Lagoon.    

Connected Pathways – This project will see a highly interconnected walking and cycling path network in various areas of Palmerston, suitable for all ages and abilities, to increase access, safety and convenience for the community. Recent pathway upgrades have occurred on Tilston Avenue and within Woodroffe Park. Future works are planned for Buscall Avenue, Gunn and between Joan Fejo Park and Roystonea Avenue, Rosebery. Upgrades will also be undertaken along Victoria Drive, Essington Avenue and Emery Avenue around the primary schools.

Smart Cities – In partnership with the Australian and Northern Territory Governments, smart technology initiatives including public wi-fi, open data, smart lighting, smart waste bins and CCTV upgrades are being delivered in Palmerston; designed to improve liveability, deliver efficiencies and contribute to a more sustainable community. 

School Zone Road Safety Improvements – The commencement of the current school term saw the completion of Council’s program of Electronic Speed Limit Signs installation at all Palmerston school crossings. The signs alert drivers to the 40km/h speed limit and have been proven effective in creating safer school zones. Council is now looking to expand its road safety program next financial year.

Community Safety – 117 laneways provide connectivity for the community and a number of these narrow laneways have been identified as anti-social hotspots. New treatments including new lighting will be implemented to increase safety across the city.

Palmerston Library Upgrades – The library services Palmerston and the regional area, with more than 150,000 people visiting each year. A review of the design and needs will be undertaken, and a plan for renewal and refurbishment to ensure the Library continues to meet the needs of the growing community.

Mitchell Creek and Escarpment Feasibility and Operations Study – An opportunity has been identified to further protect and maintain this valuable ecosystem whilst exploring opportunities to boost tourism and community infrastructure through engagement with groups like the Larrakia people, friends of Mitchell Creek and the community.

Palmerston Aquatic Centre Upgrades – Part of the Pr6ject initiatives this project will deliver a renewed facility to cater for the growing needs of the community and a family city.
