Nominations to stand as a candidate for the 2018 City of Palmerston elections open on Friday 2 February and close on 22 February 2018.
“Running for Council is a big decision. Elected Members play an important role in shaping the operations of the council and long-term strategic direction of their local community,” said Official Manager, Mark Blackburn.
“To help prepare potential candidates, City of Palmerston will be holding an information session to provide a better understanding of the role and responsibilities of an Elected Member.
As we move closer to election time, I encourage community members interested in putting their names forward on 2 February to come along to the information session and hear what is involved in the role.
It is an opportunity for potential candidates to meet key people within local government and ask questions.”
The information session will be held on Wednesday 31 January 2018, 5:30-7:00 PM in Council Chambers, Civic Plaza.
The session will provide information on the role and expectations of Elected Members, policies and procedures, available support, eligibility and the process of how to nominate as a candidate for Council election.
Presentations will include representatives from the Northern Territory Electoral Commission, Local Government Association of Northern Territory and the Department of Housing and Community Development.
Voting in local government elections is compulsory. All Palmerston residents aged 18 years or over are encouraged to enrol or check their enrolment at www.ntec.nt.gov.au. The electoral roll closes at 5 PM 13 February 2018.
