With the cyclone season officially here, City of Palmerston is reminding residents to begin their preparations.
“Being prepared early is essential to ensure you, your family and property are ready for whatever this year’s wet season has in store for us,” said City of Palmerston Mayor Athina Pascoe-Bell.
“One of the first steps to being prepared is to look around your own backyard. In the event of a cyclone, flying debris is one of the greatest potential dangers, so I encourage residents to take the time now to reduce that danger; remove or secure loose items in your yard.
Now is the time to prepare your cyclone kit. The Secure NT website has great tips on what to include in your emergency kit, preparing your home and how to keep your pets safe during a cyclonic event,” she said.
“It’s also timely to remind the community that conditions in pipes and drains can be very unpredictable, especially during the wet season when water levels can rise significantly in a short time period. Playing in pipes and drains is dangerous. It is important that parents educate their children about the dangers and high risk of serious injury or drowning,” added Mayor Pascoe-Bell.
Residents who witness anything that poses a safety concern, or inappropriate activities by anyone around stormwater pipes and drains, are asked to please contact Police.
Council continues to carry out regular inspections of stormwater infrastructure and has completed assessments in preparation for the wet season.
