Renewing your dog registration
If your dog is already registered in Palmerston, you will need to renew your dog/s registration by 1 September each year, with a short grace period provided until 30 September.
Compulsory cat registration comes into effect on 1 September 2024.
To renew your dog’s registration, you will need the seven-digit reference number located in the payment section on your renewal notice.

Our new (Animal Management) By-Laws are now in effect as of 1 July 2024.
Registration enables our rangers to identify and promptly reunite lost dogs and cats with their owners. If you are living in the Palmerston municipality it's required that dogs and cats owners register and microchip their animals.
Key 2024 dates include:
- Compulsory registration for cats and dogs as of 1 September 2024.
- Cat fees are waived for the first six months and applicable from 1 March 2025.
- Compulsory microchipping for registered cats and dogs, with a six-month grace period from 1 September 2024 to 28 February 2025.
- Maximum of two dogs and two cats per property without a licence.
Multiple cat and dog licence
If you have more than two cats or dogs at your home, a licence is required.

Council also provides 50% discount for dogs and cats that are desexed.
*50% discount will apply for 2024/25 entire cat registration only.
