8 October 2021

City of Palmerston can now progress with the proposed SWELL development, with the confirmed funding announcement by the Australian Government earlier today.

Senator for the Northern Territory, Dr Sam McMahon was onsite at the Palmerston Swimming and Fitness Centre with the Palmerston Mayor Athina Pascoe-Bell today to announce the receipts of funding through the Building Better Regions Fund round 5. City of Palmerston were allocated $5 million for the Swimming Wellness Events Leisure and Lifestyle (SWELL) project

The SWELL project includes a refurbishment of the 50 metre pool, a toddlers zero depth and play pool, an events area, basketball half court, new and improve accessible toilets and change rooms, a new café and aquatic play structure, will now be able to progress to the next stage with the confirmed joint funding.

Mayor Athina Pascoe-Bell, who was also present at the launch said

“I’m delighted by the news for the confirmed financial contribution of $5 million from the Australian Government towards the $15 million SWELL development project in partnership with the Northern Territory Government and City of Palmerston. The project has been a long time in the making. With news of this funding we hope to have the project tender out by Christmas.”

“The facility plays a vital role in the community’s social, health and general wellbeing needs, and with the revitalisation of the existing Palmerston Swimming and Fitness Centre, it will certainly create a more comfortable and contemporary accessible precinct that can be used by our diverse and ever-growing community”

SWELL (Swimming, Wellness, Events, Leisure, Lifestyle) is part of City of Palmerston’s strategic vision and aligns with the Community Plan in establishing a Vibrant Economy, Future Focused and of course a safe place for family and community where everyone belongs.
