The Palmerston municipality has a growing population, particularly attracting families and given such, a strong focus is placed around our outdoor spaces. Currently the City has over 100 parks with approximately 50 having play equipment. In fact, there is a playground or outdoor community space within 500 metres of every household.  

As a forward thinking and proactive Council, Palmerston Council has put forward a Play Space Strategy to ensure a more robust and consistent approach to planning throughout the public open space across the Municipality. 
 
In the Council meeting held 1 February 2022, Council passed the strategy, and all agreed with the overall vision to have quality play spaces that are welcoming, creative and accessible to all, contributing to the liveability of the City. 

“Play is a critical part of growth and learning for children, and given our young family population, it’s an important goal that aligns to the core community outcomes and the overall vision of Palmerston as a place for people. Given the recent times, health and wellbeing of the community is of great importance, and these outdoor community environments play a significant role in contributing to that” said Mayor Athina Pascoe-Bell
 
Late 2021 City of Palmerston also released an Inclusive, Diverse and Accessible Framework which aims to ensure all future planning and initiatives maintain inclusivity for all ages, cultures, demographics and beliefs. The play space strategy incorporates consideration for accessible play equipment for all abilities, and all future infrastructure developments for parks and playgrounds will include this within the planning stages.
