City of Palmerston has released the Home Composting Rebate, an environmental initiative aimed at encouraging more Palmerston households to repurpose their food and garden waste through composting and worm farming.

Council is offering a rebate of up to $50 to eligible Palmerston households towards the purchase of compost bins or worm farms, with applications opening Wednesday 12 January.

Composting and worm farms are one of the easiest ways to incorporate recycling into your everyday routine and reduce your environmental footprint at home. Along with reducing landfill, compost helps to strengthen and increase water retention in soil, valuable in helping your garden to thrive.

Council collects and disposes over 8500 tonnes of waste to landfill each year with food waste making up almost 40% of this.  Council is committed to supporting and increasing recycling at home to reduce landfill waste disposal and greenhouse gas emissions.

City of Palmerston Acting Mayor, Sarah Henderson encourages all Palmerston residents to apply for the rebate.

“The Home Composting Rebate is a positive initiative that encourages residents in our community to be sustainable and make a difference.

Composting is also a fantastic way for everyone whether young or elderly to get involved, turn their food waste into a nutrient rich compost and improve and enrich their garden,” she said.

The rebate initiative  is aligned with City of Palmerston’s Environmental Sustainability objective; to reduce our footprint on the environment. It also compliments the current Draft Sustainability Strategy which is now being finalised for Council adoption early this year.
