The City of Palmerston has reconfirmed its commitment to supporting the local economy and will be continuing free parking across the Palmerston City Centre.

The City of Palmerston’s City Centre Parking Strategy and Implementation Plan, adopted in May 2019, has been recently reviewed.

In 2019, Council commenced free parking in timed zones of 4 hours and less, which was then extended to include all-day parking also being free in 2020 as a response to COVID. The online parking app PayStay was also introduced in late 2020, making it even easier to obtain a free ticket in timed zones.

City of Palmerston Mayor, Athina Pascoe-Bell says the extension of free parking is yet another way to create ‘A Place for People’. This is achieved through the management of parking that balances movement, community and business needs, place making and economic growth.

“City of Palmerston has reviewed its Parking Strategy and will be continuing free parking throughout the City Centre. Free parking is seen as a vital support to the businesses of Palmerston. It supports the local economy, improving accessibility for our community and visitors.

“We have some incredible local businesses and shopping available here. I encourage people across the broader Darwin area to visit a new Palmerston business they may not have visited before and take full advantage of the free parking in our City Centre,” she said.

With the review of the Implementation Plan, a number of other parking related activities will occur, such as consultation with businesses, increased surveys and removal of parking meters in all-day zones.
