Following community consultation, Council has approved the implementation of a new Laneway Management Policy as well as the continuation of the existing laneway treatments across Palmerston’s suburbs for an additional 12-month period.

The Laneway Management Policy looks at considering the needs of the community by enabling residents to submit a request for the treatment of a Palmerston laneway and outlines the steps and timeframes that Council will take in assessing these requests. 

City of Palmerston Mayor Athina Pascoe-Bell said that the Policy will enable residents to access laneway treatment options where there is a proven need, to help improve safety in the community.  

“Council will undertake an evidence based approach via a thorough assessment process including the installation of a CCTV camera, request of information from the Northern Territory Police, communications with residents in the immediate vicinity, amongst other methods to obtain laneway usage data,” said the City of Palmerston Mayor.  

“In early 2019, Council began trialling treatments in various laneways to assess if the measures taken would help discourage anti-social behaviour and the results have been positive. We have seen a decrease in Police reports coming through in these areas and residents have mostly been supportive of the trial.” 

Community consultation on the Laneway Management Policy was open from 23 September and closed on 21 October 2020.

A review of the outcomes of the subsequent 12 months will be reported to Council by December 2021 to inform future decision-making.
