City of Palmerston has announced it will build a new $1.455 million multi-use facility in Gray to create
a space where people can meet, play and socialise following an Australian Government commitment
of funding.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael
McCormack said the new hall would strengthen the local community.
“We are ensuring funding is going to the Territory, building places for our community to come
together and celebrate, collaborate and connect,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.
“Community halls are part of the fabric of our regions and it’s the regions for who Sam McMahon
fights for the hardest in Canberra, ensuring Territorians receive what they need, want and most of all
deserve.”
Senator for the Northern Territory Dr Sam McMahon said the new Gray Community Hall will help
facilitate regular community group meetings such as bingo, dancing and school reunions.
“As the Country Liberal Party Senator, my focus is delivering for Palmerston and the wider-Territory
and this funding commitment is another example of that.”
Gray Community Hall is Council’s most frequently hired facility and a much-loved home to a number
of community groups. However, the facility is aging and in need of an upgrade to create a hall that is
contemporary, versatile and inviting.
“We are thrilled to be building a new community space that will look amazing and cater to all areas
of our community in the heart of Palmerston,” City of Palmerston Mayor Athina Pascoe-Bell said.
“The hall will be a real draw card for birthday parties, school functions, performances and create a
place to build relationships and community identity.”
The new Gray Community Hall will include main and secondary indoor spaces connected to improved
kitchen and bathroom facilities, expansive veranda space with high ceiling fans and an outdoor toilet
that can also be used by people enjoying the community garden.
Council has engaged local architecture firm Rossi Architects to provide concept drawings of the
expansion to the Gray Community Hall. The reimagined Gray Community Hall would provide the City
of Palmerston with an exemplary enhanced facility for the hosting of a wide variety of community
functions. City of Palmerston will be speaking with stakeholder groups and the community over the
next three weeks about the concept drawings.
The redeveloped Gray Community Hall will include energy efficiency considerations such as solar
systems, smart controlled irrigation, LED lighting and a higher level of air-conditioning efficiency. The
old facility will be demolished to make way for the redevelopment and is expected to be finished by
July 2021.
