Disability permit holders will now be able to park for free in timed or metered parking bays in the Palmerston city centre.
City of Palmerston last night endorsed vehicles displaying a valid disability permit to be permitted to park in Council managed on and off-street parking for twice the maximum time zone free of charge without penalty.
Official Manager, Mark Blackburn said this decision follows consultation with senior members of our community.
“Council meets regularly with the Palmerston Seniors Advisory Group, and during a recent meeting it was requested that Council consider introducing free parking for disability permit holders in any timed bay, for twice the allowed time.
We want to assist disability permit holders to access all areas of the city centre, and this amendment will provide immediate benefit.
Council will be undertaking a communication campaign to promote the change, including writing to our current disability permit holders,” he said.
Previously, disability permit holders (displaying a valid disability permit) were required to purchase a ticket to park in a timed bay and then permitted to stay for twice the period shown on the ticket.
Designated disability parking bays continue to be free for vehicles displaying a valid disability permit.
All other parking restrictions will remain in place.
