City of Palmerston hosted the 2025 Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony and Awards on Sunday, 26 January 2025.
Friends and family gathered at the Palmerston Recreation Centre, along with government officials, local leaders and community members, to witness the heartfelt moment as conferees took their pledge, officially becoming Australian citizens.
With the theme Reflect, Respect and Celebrate, the event was truly multicultural, featuring 30 new citizens hailing from 12 different countries.
A record number of nominations were received for the 2025 Palmerston Australia Day Awards, with a range of individuals and groups who play a crucial role in making Palmerston a vibrant and thriving community celebrated.
Rodney Greenwood was awarded Citizen of the Year for his exceptional leadership, community spirit and unwavering dedication as president of the Palmerston Raiders Rugby League Football Club. Since 2019, Rodney has transformed the Palmerston Raiders Club, increasing membership by 56% and establishing a successful women’s team.
Yolanda Kanyai was awarded Young Citizen of the Year for her work with community organisations including Vibrant Diverse Cultures, Football without Borders and Rotaract NT Young Professionals, leading to the creation of innovative and impactful community initiatives.
Community Event of the Year was Palmerston NAIDOC Committee Elders Lunch, which was held on 10 July, arranged by the NAIDOC Organising Committee and funded by Grassroots Action Palmerston. The event brought together 100 First Nations Elders from across the community, fostering a sense of connection and belonging, through shared stories, and knowledge strengthening social bonds within the community.
City of Palmerston Mayor, Athina Pascoe-Bell said, “We extend a warm welcome to our newest citizens and congratulate our award winners and all those who were nominated. The commitment and dedication of all our award winners across each of the categories is remarkable.”
