Palmerston’s sustainable future

City of Palmerston has adopted a bold new Sustainability Strategy to ensure the environment and liveability of Palmerston is protected and enhanced for current and future generations.

A key outcome identified in the community plan is ‘Environmental Sustainability’ for which the Sustainability Strategy 2022 sets to deliver on. Given the size and growth of the municipality, the strategy needed to consider a number of factors including protecting our surrounding environment, empowering and connecting community, future efficiencies and responsible and ethical investments and initiatives.

October 2021 saw the Palmerston community and other key external stakeholders provide feedback on the strategy which has been incorporated in the final document and will now act as a fundamental guideline, along with other Council strategies, on how future projects and initiatives will be rolled-out.

Mayor Athina Pascoe-Bell commended the background work that was put into strategy. “I think the strategy perfectly aligns with the Council’s direction, the community and allows for the growth of the Municipality. The feedback garnered from key stakeholders and the community was a vital part of the process and we thank everyone for their contributions. The strategy really considers the needs and wants of the community, and identifies achievable targets”

Alongside an Action Plan for 2022-2027, several targets have been developed to indicate successes under the Strategy:
•    Urban heat mitigation through net increase of canopy cover levels
•    Connecting with community through greater promotion of environmental sustainability
•    Improved waste management behaviours through an increase of recycling and diversion from landfill
