Families came together at Goyder Square on Saturday night to enjoy a free outdoor screening of The Pout Pout Fish (G) as Darwin International Film Festival (DIFF) returned to Palmerston.
The first screening attracted over 300 registrations, with families enjoying an evening of free entertainment, food trucks and a spectacular light show from Northern Lights NT before settling in for the movie.
Following the success of Saturday night’s event, DIFF will wrap up its 2026 Palmerston program this Saturday 19 September with a screening of Buffalo Kids (PG).
Festivities will kick off again at 6pm, with the film screening from 7pm. Food and entertainment will be available throughout the evening.
City of Palmerston Mayor Athina Pascoe-Bell said the free screenings were a fantastic opportunity for families to enjoy a night out together in the heart of Palmerston.
“We are excited to welcome the Darwin International Film Festival back to Palmerston for a fantastic night of free family entertainment.
“Events like this are a wonderful way to bring our community together, while giving families the opportunity to enjoy arts and culture right here in Palmerston.”
DIFF Festival Manager Erin Lucas said the first screening was a fantastic start to the festival’s return to Palmerston.
“It was fantastic to see so many families come along to Goyder Square on Saturday night and enjoy a little of the Deckchair Cinema magic right here in Palmerston.

“DIFF is all about connecting audiences with great stories, new experiences and the incredible diversity of cinema, and these free outdoor screenings are a fantastic way to share that with families across the Top End.”
The final screening, Buffalo Kids, follows two Irish orphans as they travel across America by train, where they meet new friends and face an adventure involving bandits.
Families are encouraged to bring along a picnic rug and enjoy an evening of free entertainment and outdoor cinema in the heart of Palmerston.
City of Palmerston is proud to continue its partnership with DIFF, bringing family friendly outdoor movies to the Palmerston community.
