We are proud to be a member of the global Hidden Disabilities Sunflower network. This reflects our commitment to creating welcoming, inclusive and accessible environments for everyone in our community.

Not all disabilities are visible. The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower provides a discreet way for people living with non-visible disabilities, conditions or chronic illnesses to indicate they may need extra support, understanding, time or space when accessing our facilities and services.

Wearing the Sunflower is always a personal choice. There is no requirement to explain or disclose personal information.

How the Sunflower works

The sunflower symbol helps raise awareness and encourages respectful, patient and inclusive interactions. When staff recognise the Sunflower, they can respond with understanding and offer appropriate support based on individual needs.

The Sunflower does not identify a specific disability. It simply signals that someone may need a little extra consideration.

Accessing a Sunflower

We aim to make the Sunflower easy for everyone to access.

Sunflower lanyards, ally badges and wristbands are available at Civic Plaza, Palmerston Recreation Centre and Palmerston Library.

If you are unsure where to go, speak with any staff member and they will assist you.

Together, we can help make the invisible visible.

The Sunflower is for anyone living with a non-visible disability, condition or chronic illness who feels it may help them when accessing services or facilities. Wearing it is always a personal choice.
