Making the Switch program saw City of Palmerston replace all street lights with energy efficient LED lights with smart controls. Smart controls will allow Council to manage the lighting in real time through software, where Council will be able to identify in real time the operational status. It will also allow us to provide improved asset management and maintenance data, and the ability to remotely dim or brighten lighting.

All street and public space lights owned by City of Palmerston have been upgraded to smart LED.  The final light was converted on 1 May 2020.

Project Information

A total of 4879 lights have been replaced with new LEDs with smart controls under this project.

The project will provide savings after associated costs, to the order of $2.59 million in savings over 12 years which will be utilised to improve future lighting in the City.

Carbon dioxide emissions of the new LEDs lights are expected to be reduced by up to 50%, which would be the equivalent of saving more than 470 tons carbon dioxide and planting more than 500 hectares of Australian forest trees.

Cost and duration

Council committed a total of $3.65 million to the project. Council has completed delivery of this project to the value of $3.3 million. 

Council has completed this project 12 months ahead of schedule, the project was originally proposed to be completed over two years.
