The new City of Palmerston (Animal Management) By-Laws are now in effect as of 1 July 2024.

Registration enables City of Palmerston Rangers to identify and promptly reunite lost dogs and cats with their owners. If you are living in the Palmerston municipality, it is a recommended that owners register and microchip their cats and dogs as of 1 July 2024. 

Key changes since 1 July 2024 include:

  • Compulsory registration for cats and dogs as of 1 September 2024.
  • Cat fees waived for the first six months and applicable from 1 March 2025.
  • Compulsory microchipping for registered cats and dogs, with a six-month grace period from 1 September 2024 to 28 February 2025.
  • Maximum of two dogs and two cats per property without a licence.

Renewing your dog registration

If your dog is already registered with City of Palmerston, you will need to renew your dog/s registration by the 1 September each year, with a short grace period provided until 30 September.

Compulsory cat registration comes into effect on 1 September 2024.  

To renew your dog’s registration, you will need the seven-digit reference number located in the payment section on your renewal notice.

Council also provides 50% discount for dogs and cats that are desexed.

*50% discount will apply for 2024/25 entire cat registration only.
